As the communications assistant for the Office of Undergraduate Research, I contribute to the mission of the office by promoting undergraduate research opportunities and experiences on Auburn University’s campus. In this position my main duties include assisting the director of undergraduate research in coordinating event programming, managing the Office of Undergraduate Research website , and facilitating the Auburn University Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program .
The main event our office contributes to is the annual “This is Research: Student Symposium” held each spring. This past year over 100 undergraduate and 200 graduate students participated. I assisted in planning and promoting this event by compiling information for the event program and website, promoting the event on the Office of Undergraduate Research Facebook Page and helped set-up and tear down the event space before and after the event. I also entered judges’ scores into a database and photographed the event.
Other events presented by our Office include professional development workshops, class-talks where students are encouraged to obtain undergraduate research opportunities, and a meeting once per semester for the Undergraduate Research Fellows to share their experiences with each other.
Other communication management duties include maintaining the Office of Undergraduate Research website where I design and create visually pleasing webpages with compelling copy.
I also create, compile, and distribute a weekly electronic newsletter delivered to the inboxes of over 650 subscribers . Each semester I also analyze metrics for the effectiveness of our website using Google Analytics, email newsletter reach using Mailchimp, and Facebook reach using Facebook Page manager.
Many natives to the St. Louis area obtain their first work experience at St. Louis Bread Co., also called Panera Bread outside the region. As an associate, I was introduced to the world of corporate business culture and values. In my position working on the “production line,” I mainly crafted sandwiches and salads or served soup to café guests. Working at Panera provided me an opportunity to practice teamwork while I learned the fundamentals of customer service, specifically how to be an effective interpersonal communicator in order to provide a quality experience for guests.
